How the world works, Unit 3- Week One

"O Tannenbaum, O Tannenbaum,
Wie treu sind deine Blätter!"
What a wonderful cold morning, our 'fireplace' was lit and the children gathered around the DSKI Christmas Tree for its annual lighting tradition.

After a beautiful bell performance by the Grade Fives and Sixes, the choir sang a cheery Christmas song and the rest of the school joined in with the singing too.
The Grade Threes received their stunning advent calendar and participated in the fun activity hidden inside for Day 1.
A big THANK YOU to our PTA for making these wonderful advent calendars and turning the school into a spirited Christmas haven.
This week we began with our new Unit of inquiry, `How the world works`. The Fiery Foxes will be `discovering what Natural Phenomena is, with emphasis being placed on NATURAL, and looking into how different societies prepare for extreme natural phenomena.

We gathered by the Wonder Wall to reflect on the knowledge the Grade 3s acquired in their previous unit. The Foxes were happy to discuss and relay their findings based on their last set of questions, the twinkle in their eyes and excitement when answering is something remarkable to witness because it is in that moment when they realize, the answers to their thoughts and their questions is something they have now mastered.

With that, we added a new layer of bricks to the Wonder Wall, writing down questions that arose from our introductory session on, Natural Phenomena.

Not only was the balloon used for Christmas decoration and morning warmups,
they also discovered how friction causes static electricity, and how metal generates heat when rubbed against certain surfaces.

During English the Foxes wrote about their weekend and the events that took place, we also spent time reviewing and editing their news. They worked on their comprehension skills in groups and were motivated to make it work for the best in their little teams.

Venn Diagrams, Frequency Charts, Carroll Diagrams and more, we are learning about different ways to display and interpret Data in Mathematics. There is also a VERY competitive competition happening on TT Rockstars (Times Tables) collaborating with the Grade 4s, making it a Boy vs. Girl competition... I wonder who is going to win this tournament?
