Hands on- Week Four

Carnival
A fun-filled afternoon with lots of exciting games, dancing and candy!
Take a look at how some of the Fiery Foxes clothing designs turned out from last week.
As we explore nonfiction forms of texts further in English, the Fiery Foxes looked into how a recipe is structured and written. They were then tasked with researching and writing a recipe that could be used during the Ancient Egypt times. Recipes: Pharaoh's flatbread, Ancient Egyptian beer, Saboob flatbread, Salatet Zabadee (Yoghurt cucumber dip), Date candy, Sweet cookies. Recognizing that the equipment was modern day equipment, the Foxes looked up what the Ancient Egyptians would have used instead those thousands of years ago.

We have been focusing on time, time intervals and schedules during Mathematics. The Grade Threes were very quick to pick up on the different concepts, which left us with enough `time` to have fun by putting our knowledge to the test in a friendly competitive game.
During Unit time the grade 3s became archaeologists for the day and practiced carefully extracting 'artifacts' from a piece of ground/soil, they then studied the artifacts and how they were discovered to try and reveal a bit of truth behind the discovery.

We also researched how to make bricks with raw materials (natural resources). After the Fiery Foxes wrote down a step-by-step guide on how to create mud bricks, we went out to dig up and gather the raw materials required for our upcoming construction project.
They also began their big research project this week, based on something that was invented in Ancient Egypt times and they will also be looking at the historical timeline of it up until modern day times.
To help them along the way, they were guided on how to create a rubric for checking the quality of work. They will use this `Student led Rubric- PowerPoint Presentation ` to guide them on how to produce quality work and understand what is expected of them during these research projects.

A message from the Book and Culture Committee.

Dear Parents,

"Bringing diverse people together in creating a united DSKI culture"

As the Book and Culture Week 2023 celebration is approaching, the PTA is planning and preparing a display to showcase collections from different countries. These include: food, transportation, book, food/utensils, costume, place, animal, toys/games. The committee would like to ask for you help by providing either a photo or an actual item sample for the display. It would be amazing to see the representation of ALL the countries from all the families/members of the DSKI community.

Displays:
  • Food / Utensils : You may send either a photo or the actual food (as long as it is individually packed) and the utensils. Please provide a short explanation about it.
  • Book: You may send the actual book or send us the link and we can print it online
  • Toy / Game: Real toys or photos of the traditional or popular toys/games from your own country. Please write down a short explanation or the rules on how to play the game. If you also have a link of the video, send it to us and we can play it in the booth.
  • Transportation: Photos or figures of different transportation in your country
  • Costume: Actual costumes for adult and children, accessories (hat, shawl, shoes etc) Body torso
  • Place: Photo or items representing famous city or place in your country (architectural miniatures or local products for souvenirs)
  • Animal: photo, drawing, art, or stuffed animals or figures
For photos, drawings or disposable items, you may ask your child to bring the items to school. For delicate or important collections have, you can personally hand it over to the Homeroom Teachers with instructions. It would also be easier if you could put a label or initials on the items that need to be returned back. The homeroom teachers will keep the items in the classrooms and will be collected by the Book and Culture Week Committee on the 8th of March. Set-up on the 9th of March. Items will be returned back on March 16th, 3:30 PM.

Sincerely,
Book and Culture Week Committee
